    Le Battistero trône également sur le Campo dei Miracoli, une vraie Place des Miracles ; c’est le plus grand baptistère d’Italie. Commencé en 1152, il fut rénové par Nicola et Giovanni Pisano un siècle plus tard, construit dans le même style pisan-roman utilisé pour la Cathédrale. Ce monument rond et arqué est richement décoré de niches et de statues de saints. L’intérieur est bien plus sobre, mais il compte un grand trésor : le pupitre hexagonal de Nicola Pisano, datant de 1260, gravé de scènes de la vie du Christ. Cette œuvre d’art est clairement influencée par l’art romain ancien, notable en particulier par le sarcophage romain du Camposanto (voir ci-dessous). Marie, par exemple, est dotée son long cou, son voile et des boucles typiquement utilisés dans les portraits romains des matrones d’âge mur. Si vous avez de la chance, et entendre lors de votre visite une démonstration de l’acoustique remarquable du Baptistère par l’un des gardiens. Si l’on y chante quatre notes individuelles (ou plus), le long écho leur permet de se superposer jusqu’à avoir un accord complet qui résonne étrangement en faisant le tour du dôme.
