    La campagne entourant Volterra est faite de douces collines ondulantes, interrompues à l’ouest par le spectacle sauvage et grandiose de crevasses abruptes, connues sous le nom de Le Balze, « les Rochers escarpés ». Au fil des siècles, ces profonds ravins, créés par l’érosion continuelle des couches de sable et d’argile, ont avalé fortifications, églises et peuplements. Les murs étrusques qui s’y trouvaient jadis ont été des dommages colatéraux de ce glissement de terrain, tout comme bon nombre de premières tombes chrétiennes. Aujourd’hui, une abbaye du XIe siècle, la Badia, est au bord du précipice, dans l’attente de son inévitable destin. Pour un panorama parfait de ce paysage grandiose, sortez de la ville par la Porte Ouest, Porta San Francesco, longeant le Borgo San Giusto jusqu’à ce que vous atteigniez Le Balze (20 minutes de balade).
