    Cette place centrale et pentue se trouve au cœur de la vie de la cité, et ce, depuis les temps médiévaux. Cette place principale massive, la Piazza Grande, est à peine nivelée et se trouve dans la partie la plus pittoresque et vallonée de la ville. Elle a même été filmée dans le classique, La Vite è Bella (« La Vie Est Belle »), où jouait Roberto Benigni, un gars du coin. Si l’on compare Arezzo avec la ville de Cortona, beaucoup plus touristique, cette place théâtrale et bordée de cafés apparaît plus paisible, et d’autant plus en comparaison de Florence. Admirez les portiques du Palazzo delle Logge Vasariane datant du XVIe siècle avant de vous replier dans un café, par exemple le Caffe Vasari (au numéro 15).

    La place revêt toute sa puissance évocatrice pendant la ¬Giostra del Saracino, un tournoi de joute chevaleresque qui a lieu deux fois par an, en juin et en septembre. Le premier week-end de chaque mois, cette place accueille une brocante d’antiquaires, la plus grande du genre en Italie. Les étals recouvrent la place, font le tour de la base du Duomo, et se déversent sur le Corso Italia pavé, principale rue marchande de la ville. C’est pareil à Noël, lorsqu’un immense marché bavarois s’y installe. En été, les locaux, connus sous le nom d’Aretini, aiment s’y balader en début de soirée (passeggiate) entre le Corso Italia et la place.
